One-leg vs Two-leg Forex Arbitrage | New Hope

New Hope PRO: one trading account compared with two trading accounts taking opposite positions.

A fast quote creates information. A filled order creates a position. Confusing those two events is one reason an attractive arbitrage signal can produce a disappointing result. Adding a second trading account changes the structure, but it also adds another execution that must succeed.

This guide compares one-leg and two-leg forex arbitrage through a complete EURUSD example. It shows where the result comes from, what happens when one side fills only partly, and which questions to resolve before choosing a New Hope PRO configuration. All prices, volumes and fees below are synthetic teaching data.

What does a leg mean?

Here, a leg means one trading side of the strategy. In the one-leg model, the software compares a reference price stream with a trading account and opens exposure on that account when its signal conditions are met. The reference feed supplies information; receiving its quotes does not itself create a matching trade.

In the two-leg model discussed here, the intended structure contains opposite positions on two trading accounts. One account buys and the other sells corresponding exposure. Both sides need real fills, and both eventually need to be closed. Different implementations can use different opening sequences and exit logic, so the name alone does not describe a complete strategy.

Question

One trading leg

Two trading legs

Where is exposure opened?

On one trading account

On two accounts in opposite directions

What must be measured?

Signal quality, fill price and exit

Those measures on both sides, plus unmatched volume

What happens if an entry fails?

The intended position may not exist

The other side may already be open

What determines the result?

The complete entry and exit after costs

Both complete entry and exit sequences after costs

One leg: the reference price is not your exit price

Suppose a fast stream moves before the quote available on a trading connection. That observation can generate a signal, but the account must still accept the order at a usable price. The eventual exit is a separate execution. A feed can correctly lead a move while the resulting trade loses because the opportunity disappears before the entry, the exit is worse, or costs exceed the captured movement.

Start with a record of the quote received, request sent, fill received and final close. Our guide to comparing quote speed in New Hope PRO explains how to examine the price streams. Keep that measurement separate from the trading result: a faster observation and a profitable completed trade answer different questions.

Two legs: a $15 opening gap becomes a $2 result

Assume matching EURUSD contracts, USD-denominated profit calculations and 100,000 EUR on each side. In this simplified example, every displayed entry and exit price is also the actual fill price. Account A buys at its ask of 1.10000. Account B sells at its bid of 1.10015.

The opening quote difference is 0.00015. Multiplied by 100,000 EUR, that is $15. It describes the initial gap between these prices. It is not the profit from a finished two-account cycle.

Trading side

Opening fill

Closing fill

Result before fees

A: buy 100,000 EUR

Ask 1.10000

Sell at bid 1.10004

(1.10004 - 1.10000) × 100,000 = $4

B: sell 100,000 EUR

Bid 1.10015

Buy at ask 1.10009

(1.10015 - 1.10009) × 100,000 = $6

Combined closed positions

Opening gap: $15

Both positions closed

$4 + $6 = $10

Hypothetical commissions

$8 total for all four executions

$10 - $8 = $2

Synthetic two-leg EURUSD calculation: a 15 dollar opening gap produces 4 and 6 dollars from closed positions, then 2 dollars after 8 dollars in commissions.

Educational example, not an account report. Funding and any other applicable charges are excluded.

The remaining difference at the exit prices is 1.10009 - 1.10004 = 0.00005, or $5. That is why this cycle captures $10 rather than the full $15 opening gap. If the closing difference widened instead of narrowing, the outcome could be worse or negative.

Spread is already reflected in the bid and ask fills used here. Do not subtract a separate estimated spread again from this calculation. Commissions are an additional charge. Funding, currency conversion and other applicable costs must also be included in a real account review. IG's explanation of the forex spread describes the bid/ask difference.

If the second leg fills only 70%

Now suppose A buys the requested 100,000 EUR, but B sells only 70,000 EUR. The second side is 30% short of the intended volume. The arithmetic difference is 30,000 EUR long. That remaining exposure responds to EURUSD moves even though the screen shows both a buy and a sell.

This is an exposure calculation across separate accounts, not a statement that the brokers have combined or cancelled their positions. Each account retains its own positions, margin requirements and liquidation conditions. A gain on B does not automatically replenish available margin on A.

Before testing, define the documented response to a mismatch: how the actual filled volumes are identified, which operation is permitted next, and when the strategy stops accepting new signals. An unknown response needs reconciliation before another order. See our order rejection and uncertain-response guide.

MetaQuotes distinguishes fill policies: FOK requires the requested volume or no fill; IOC permits available volume and cancels the remainder. Availability depends on the trading server and execution conditions. Crucially, a policy on one order does not make orders on two accounts an atomic transaction. See the official order-property reference.

Two accounts are not an MT5 accounting mode

MT5 hedging and netting describe how positions are recorded inside an account. They do not describe whether a strategy trades one or two accounts. The broker sets the accounting mode. Confirm the behavior required by the chosen implementation rather than treating the words “two legs” as a compatibility guarantee. Our MT5 hedging and netting guide covers that separate question, alongside the MetaQuotes definitions.

How this relates to New Hope PRO

The New Hope PRO manual describes Classic as comparing fast-feed and trading-connection prices. It also documents 2Legs as a two-account strategy with several internal modes. In this article, “one-leg” describes a conceptual structure; it is not presented as a separate button or strategy name in the interface.

Choose the specific mode and connection combination with its own instructions. Do not transfer the simplified calculation above into a live preset. The useful pre-launch discussion covers platform, exact broker server, symbols, contract sizes, account mode, VPS, fill handling and closing sequence. A successful connection alone does not settle these questions.

A practical comparison before choosing

  1. Define the exposure. Record each account, symbol, direction and actual contract size. Equal lot labels do not prove equal economic exposure.

  2. Check execution. Compare requested and filled volumes, prices, time and unsuccessful requests on every side.

  3. Calculate completed cycles. Include every closing execution and fee. Retain failed and partial cycles in the sample.

  4. Test interruption handling. Establish the actual account state after a lost connection before resuming.

  5. Confirm the account rules. Software capabilities do not override broker conditions. For funded accounts, read the separate guide to two-leg trading and prop firm rules.

For one leg, focus on how reliably the signal becomes a completed trade. For two legs, add the cost and operational burden of matching and closing both sides. The appropriate choice comes from that evidence, not from the number of legs.
