MT4 vs FIX API: choosing a connection for New Hope PRO

You have a broker account, a VPS and a trading strategy. The next question sounds simple: should you connect through MT4 or FIX API? Searching for “MT4 vs FIX API arbitrage” usually leads to a claim that one route must be faster. That is not enough to choose a working configuration.
The useful comparison concerns the connection your broker actually provides: which instruments it supports, what happens after an order is sent, what records you receive and what the account costs. This guide shows how to make that comparison for New Hope PRO, including a timing example where the quickest acknowledgement does not produce the earliest fill report.
First, compare two available routes, not two labels
MT4 is a trading platform. FIX is a messaging standard used to exchange trading information. It is not a broker, a liquidity pool or a promise of a particular execution speed. The FIX Trading Community describes the protocol as defining the meaning and structure of trading messages independently of the underlying network. FIX protocol overview.
For this article, “MT4 route” means the supported connection to an MT4 trading account, while “FIX route” means the broker's supported FIX connection. If the routes use different accounts, pricing or execution arrangements, their results describe those whole configurations. They do not isolate the effect of a protocol.
Check | MT4 route | FIX API route |
|---|---|---|
Access | Correct MT4 account and trading server | FIX access enabled for the intended account |
Connection details | Account credentials and the required server address and port | Broker-supplied session details and supported connection type |
Instruments | Exact broker symbol, contract size and volume step | Instrument identifiers, quantity units and permitted order types |
Order behaviour | Execution conditions for that account and symbol | Broker's rules for acknowledgements, fills and rejects |
Operational limits | Check applicable connection and request limits | Check session schedule, request limits and reconnection rules |
Costs | Account pricing, commissions and hosting | The same costs, plus any stated access or session charges |
What this means inside New Hope PRO
New Hope PRO supports MT4 and FIX API connections, alongside MT5 and cTrader. Support for the connection type still requires compatibility with the particular broker and account.
The New Hope PRO manual describes adding an MT4 connection with account details and the trading server's address and port. It uses MetaTrader to check the account and identify the correct endpoint. Do not assume this is an Expert Advisor sending each order through a separate terminal: that is not the workflow described in the manual.
For FIX, obtain the parameters from the broker. Price and trading connections can have separate details. Copying another person's host, port or session settings is not a substitute for your own configuration. Use the New Hope PRO setup guide to prepare access, then confirm the appropriate connector before moving funds or changing a working setup.
Ask the broker these questions before testing
Can this exact account use both connections, or would FIX require a different account?
Are pricing, execution arrangements and permitted strategies the same?
Are the instrument, contract size, quantity units and minimum order size equivalent?
Which order types and time-in-force instructions are supported on each route?
What are the session hours, request limits and rules after a disconnection?
Which identifiers and timestamps can be supplied for troubleshooting?
Are there access charges, minimum activity requirements or different commissions?
Keep the answers with your test notes. A fast connection that cannot support the required order behaviour is not an interchangeable replacement. If a broker's answer is unclear, leave the item unresolved instead of filling the gap with an assumption.
A quick acknowledgement is not a completed trade
An acknowledgement confirms a particular stage of order handling. A fill report describes execution. FIX execution reports can carry acknowledgements, order status, fills or rejections, so the message name alone does not prove that the requested quantity traded. Read the reported event and state. FIX specification: orders and executions.
Here is an invented example of two instrumented routes. Every value is elapsed time measured on one local clock, from sending the request to receiving the specified response. These are teaching numbers, not New Hope PRO measurements or an MT4/FIX benchmark.
Observed event | MT4 route | FIX route |
|---|---|---|
Request sent | 0 ms | 0 ms |
Acceptance acknowledgement received | 18 ms | 7 ms |
Complete-fill report received | 28 ms | 32 ms |
Interval between those two received responses | 10 ms | 25 ms |

Illustrative local response timeline. The numbers compare received messages, not broker-side processing times.
FIX acknowledges 11 ms earlier in this example. Yet its complete-fill report arrives 4 ms later. The 10 ms and 25 ms gaps are intervals between locally observed responses, not measurements of the broker's internal work. Neither route wins a real performance test on the basis of these invented orders.
The MT4 acknowledgement is a hypothetical observation point for explaining the comparison. Either route may lack a separate acceptance event; a FIX workflow can report an immediate fill without a separate preliminary acknowledgement. Record an unavailable field as unavailable. Do not rename a successful function return or an unrelated status update just to complete the table.
Build a test that can answer your question
Decide what you need to learn before collecting numbers. For example: does the alternative connection improve the time to a confirmed fill without worsening execution price or increasing rejected requests? That question is more useful than asking which route can produce the lowest single response time.
Fix the comparison conditions. Record broker, account type, instrument, quantity, order type, VPS, software version and observation period. Note every unavoidable difference.
Define each timing boundary. Specify what “sent”, “accepted” and “filled” mean in the available records. Prefer intervals measured on the same local clock. Do not subtract unrelated server and VPS timestamps.
Retain every outcome. Include rejections, timeouts, partial fills and unresolved requests. Match requests to responses using the identifiers actually available.
Repeat under comparable conditions. Separate quiet periods from busy ones. A demo test can check connectivity and workflow; do not treat its fills as a substitute for live-account execution evidence.
Review the whole result. Compare response timing, fill price, executed quantity, failures and costs. Preserve the original records.
For a larger sample, report its size and typical response time together with slower outcomes. One unusually good order cannot establish reliability. If the available records are incomplete, the next step is better observation, not a stronger claim.
Execution rules can matter more than the connector name
MetaQuotes documents different MT4 execution modes and states that the broker defines the mode for each instrument. Under instant execution, a price not accepted by the broker can result in a requote; market execution follows different price handling. MetaTrader 4 execution modes.
Therefore, changing the connection while also changing account conditions can change several things at once. Include the resulting prices and commissions in your decision. The trading-bot execution audit explains how to reconcile requests, fills and costs without counting the same cost twice.
Which route should you choose?
Keep a supported MT4 setup when it meets your requirements and the alternative has no demonstrated operational advantage. Investigate FIX when the broker offers the required access, the connector is compatible and there is a concrete reason to compare it. Postpone the switch when session requirements, order behaviour or account costs remain unclear.
If your account is on cTrader, use the separate cTrader FIX API vs Open API comparison. That choice concerns a different pair of interfaces and should not be inferred from an MT4 test.
Before configuring New Hope PRO, prepare your broker name, account type, intended instruments and the connection details offered to you. Those details allow the New Hope team to check the actual connection. They are much more useful than a request for “the fastest API”.
