Forex know-how

Updated October 14, 2026. The original article was published on January 4, 2021. A useful comparison of cryptocurrency trading methods starts with the transaction structure: which asset or contract is recorded, whether borrowing is involved, how costs are calculated, and what happens when collateral is insufficient. There is no universal winner across those dimensions.
This article examines ordinary unleveraged spot trading, margin trading, dated and perpetual contracts, and CFDs. These are different mechanisms, not steps toward guaranteed higher returns. The purpose is to help read a specification and statement, not to recommend an asset, leverage level or trading venue.
Unleveraged spot: exchange of assets and custody
An ordinary spot purchase exchanges a quote asset for a base asset, such as USDT for a quantity of BTC. After execution, inspect the quantity received, commission and custody arrangements. Assets held by a venue create a different arrangement from independent control of private keys; a displayed balance alone does not establish that control.
This scenario does not involve a trading-loan obligation. However, the asset's price can decline, while custody and platform access remain separate considerations. Review withdrawal conditions, transfer network, instrument availability and applicable restrictions. An exchange brand does not make infrastructure invulnerable or guarantee the safety of funds.
Execution analysis includes the spread between available bid and ask prices, commission and actual fills. A limit order does not necessarily add liquidity: its immediately executed portion may have a different fee role from the remainder resting in the book. See the maker and taker fee guide for the distinction.
Margin trading adds a borrowing obligation
Borrowed-funds trading requires accounting for debt, charges and collateral as well as the position. For example, Bybit's official Spot Margin introduction describes account assets being used as collateral for borrowing. This is a particular product's design, not one set of rules for every exchange.
Borrowing limits, interest calculations, eligible collateral and liquidation mechanisms depend on venue and account mode. A comparison should not assign one leverage ratio to the whole market or claim that private traders always supply the loan. Inspect the specific service's contractual conditions.
Closing a trade and repaying a liability are related but separate events. Establish whether the debt was actually repaid and whether charges remain. Calculating only the entry-to-exit price difference can omit a substantial part of the account result.
Dated futures: contract specifications and final settlement
A dated contract has defined trading-termination and settlement conditions. Its result should not be equated with acquiring coins. For example, CME describes its relevant cryptocurrency futures as financially settled contracts. Always check the specification of the particular instrument being considered.
Contract size, tick size, settlement currency, calendar, collateral and commissions matter. One future's parameters cannot describe the whole market, and venue regulation does not eliminate operational risks. A listed contract is also not necessarily available to every customer in every jurisdiction.
Perpetual contracts require separate funding accounting
A perpetual contract generally lacks the scheduled expiry of a dated future. Its rules may include funding between holders of opposing positions. Payment direction, rate and interval follow the instrument's rules and current conditions; the same side does not always pay.
Keep funding distinct from trading commission and borrowing interest. A forecast rate is not a settled entry. Use actual records with timestamp, currency and payment sign when preparing a statement. The separate funding-cost guide explains reconciliation with a bot's results.
CFDs settle a contractual price difference
A CFD produces a contractual price-difference result, rather than coins that can be transferred on a blockchain. Execution conditions, contract size, holding costs and account protections depend on the agreement and applicable rules. A broker should not automatically be characterised as the client's permanent adversary, nor should lower costs be promised because a product is labelled a CFD.
Availability requires a separate check. FCA COBS 22.6, checked for this update, prohibits firms within its scope from selling, distributing or marketing cryptoasset derivatives to retail clients within its stated application. That is a material comparison condition, not an invitation to circumvent restrictions.
Compare consistently defined results
Consider a hypothetical set of completed operations: the result at actual execution prices is +40 units, commissions are 6, and a separately applicable holding charge is 3. If neither cost has already been included in +40, the result is 40 − 6 − 3 = 31. Because the starting figure uses actual fills, subtracting an estimated slippage amount again would double-count that execution difference.
The example describes no particular product and does not imply that every trading method incurs identical charges. Where positions remain open, report their valuation and associated liabilities separately. A comparison record should identify instrument, period, capital, cash flows, fees, applicable charges and the rule for valuing open exposure.
What automation changes
A bot automates specified actions; it does not remove the instrument's structure or the user's responsibilities. Settings, account access, execution, charges and changes to venue conditions still need review. The trading-system execution audit provides a reconciliation sequence.
